Norwich has two roofing populations and they fail differently. The Victorian terraces off Unthank Road, Dereham Road and the Golden Triangle are slate and clay pantile on original timbers, and they usually go through nail sickness, one slate at a time, until patching stops being worth the scaffold. The post war estates out towards Bowthorpe, Hellesdon and Sprowston are concrete interlocking tile, and on those the tiles are often still perfectly serviceable while the bitumen felt underneath has turned to dust.
Which one is your roof
It matters, because the answer changes the job. A terrace with sound slate and failed fixings can often be stripped and relaid with its own slate on new battens and membrane, which costs less than a new covering and keeps the street looking right. An estate roof with perished felt needs a full re-cover, but the tiles can sometimes come back down again afterwards.
We survey before we price, so you get told which of those you have rather than quoted for the more expensive one as a matter of course.
Access in the city
Terraced Norwich is the practical problem. There is often no side access, nowhere to stand a skip without a permit, and a shared valley gutter with the neighbour that has to be dealt with as one piece of work rather than half each. We deal with the permits, we plan the scaffold to suit the street, and where a valley is shared we will talk to the house next door before we start rather than halfway through.
Conservation areas
Large parts of central Norwich are within conservation areas, and a number of the older properties are listed. That constrains what covering you are allowed to put back, and it is much cheaper to find that out at survey than after the tiles are on site. We will tell you where you stand and what consent, if any, the job needs.

Do I need a skip permit for a re-roof in Norwich?
On most terraced streets, yes, and on some there is no room for one at all and we load direct to a lorry instead. We arrange whichever applies and it is included in the quote rather than added to it.
My roof is in a conservation area. What can I use?
Usually you will need to replace like for like, which on most of central Norwich means natural slate or clay pantile rather than a modern concrete substitute. We will confirm the position before anything is ordered.
Can my existing slates be reused?
Often a good proportion of them can. Slate outlives its nails by a long way. We sort as we strip, and the salvage rate goes into the quote so you can see what it saves you.
